Discovery of an Aztec imperial tomb

Archaeologists believe to have found the tomb of Aztec Emperor Ahuizotl. Entrance to the inner chambers is expected as early as Fall.

The site lies directly beneath a giant andesite stone monolith carved with a representation of Tlaltecuhtli, a divine being related to the mystery of creation.

From his body he gave birth to the heavens and to the underworld. Adopting both male and female forms he is known as Lord and Lady of the Earth. He devours the dead and then gives them new life. He speaks of the soul's immortality.

This giant stone monolith featuring the god Tlaltecuhtli gazing towards the sky is the lid of the Emperor's tomb. There is a need for us to revisit our appreciation and understanding of the Aztec civilization, which contains a profound message to unveil and to understand.
