Losing Languages

Human diversity is not merely a cultural buzz word. It is a deep well that enriches human knowledge, existence and harmonious interaction with each other and our natural world.

Part of this diversity is the language we use to transmit idea and feeling. Language itself carries a way of seeing the world. However, more than 50% of the Earth's 7,000 languages are expected to die out by the end of the century. Losing this vast array of languages means losing knowledge of history, mythologies, ecosystems and much more, much of which is transmitted orally.

When languages die, certain ways of seeing the world often die with them. More than pointing to the differences between peoples and cultures, often the true beauty and nature of diversity is to show us that which we all have in common.
