A new free scientific journal aimed at promoting more accurate communication of
astronomy to the general public has emerged under the name of 'CAP Journal'.
To counter a form of journalism that sometimes lacks in rigour and to avoid the
pitfalls of information show that spares no one, not even the researchers in the
scientific world, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has launched this
Web site reviewed by peers, which popularizes the discoveries in astronomy and
encourages the development of scientific culture.
The IAU and UNESCO proclaimed 2009 "International Year of Astronomy." According
to the President of the IAU, Catherine J. Cesarsky: ''Astronomy is in full
explosion… It is not only destined to astronomers but belongs to all of
humankind ... And we strongly hope to make this known! ''.
She says the accessibility of discoveries and proper use of astronomy may permit disillusioned youth to
regain interest in science.
''The goal of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) is to help the
citizens of the world rediscover their place in the universe by observing the
sky, day and night, and make everyone feel the wonder of discovery. All people
should realize the impact of astronomy and of fundamental sciences in their
daily lives, and better understand how scientific knowledge can contribute to a
more just and peaceful society'', as stated on various portals highlighting the
event.
"Rediscovering our place in the universe" by relating to the daytime sky and
starry night skies, drawing within from above the means to influence one’s own daily
conduct and way of life, for the better. While experiencing awe to be alive
within the universe and its mystery, is to reactualise the exhortations of the wisdom of
East and West:
"The human being is a microcosm, know thyself and you shall know the universe
and the gods!"
